Your team goes to work every day with one primary goal: improving health outcomes.

So why aren’t they making more progress?

Because health communication only works when it’s based on behavioral science.

If you’ve been pouring resources into changing people’s behavior with no real impact on health outcomes, you’re not alone.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

It’s time to consider a new approach, based on behavioral science.

Give your team the training they need to achieve the goals that first inspired them to choose a career in public health or medicine: saving lives, reducing suffering, and increasing accessibility by lowering runaway costs.

  • Equip your team with relevant, actionable tools and techniques they can put into practice right away.
  • Transform outcomes by learning new ways to address social determinants of health, human irrationality, and anti-science bias
  • Ensure that your campaigns achieve the results that funders, policy-makers, and stakeholders want to see.
  • Get the training top public health agencies like the CDC consider essential for their employees.

Our health communication trainings give public health agencies, non-profits, healthcare organizations, hospitals, and clinicians fresh approaches to thorny problems and complex scenarios.

Fun, engaging, hands-on trainings tailored for your organization and delivered live, online to your staff wherever they may be — across the county, the state, or the globe!

Even years later, we hear from participants that they still use lessons from our trainings every day on the job!

I haven’t always been a behavioral scientist. Before getting my Ph.D. and beginning a career in health communication, I cut my teeth in media, marketing, and public relations.

When I moved over to public health, I was shocked to discover many health communicators were missing a vital tool that is the most powerful part of the communication playbook: the behavioral science techniques marketers use to change attitudes, sell products, and motivate customers.

To make matters worse, a lot of my public health colleagues were also focusing almost exclusively on individual behaviors rather than simultaneously addressing the root causes, policies, and social conditions that lead to poor health.

The more I learned about health disparities in vulnerable populations, barriers to access, and rising healthcare costs, the more I knew something had to change.

Health education and awareness are not enough to change behavior. If that’s all it took, people would already be doing the healthy things they “know” they should do. But they’re not – because best intentions often don’t motivate them to action. Many people also face systemic barriers that limit their power to make healthy choices.

Research tells us we have to get beyond just providing information. We have to connect with people’s needs and values and speak to their lived experience.

Corporate marketers use science and research every day to successfully change hearts, minds, and behaviors. And public health practitioners and healthcare professionals can get the same results — if they have the right tools and training.

If you’re ready to put those powerful tools in your team’s hands, we need to talk.

I’ve helped hundreds of health communicators improve their craft and helped hundreds of non-communicators (data scientists, researchers, clinicians, administrators, and policy-makers) support the dissemination of plain language, actionable health information and implement more effective health policy. I can help you troubleshoot what skillsets your team needs to develop and design the perfect course or training series.

I’m on the same mission you’re on:

to give everyone the possibility of living their healthiest life.

And it all starts with more effective health communication training.

For years, my trainings were only available in-person at places like the CDC. During that time, our team was hard at work developing virtual courses that exploded into popularity during COVID-19. We now have a catalog of highly acclaimed, well-tested online courses available to teams everywhere – with no geographic limitations and no travel costs. And our outcomes online are just as good — if not better — than they are in-person. With group exercises, frequent interaction, and hands-on activities, our participants say they often forget they aren’t in the same room with each other.

Let’s work together to empower your team, elevate your health communication strategy, and improve health outcomes.

How do you prevent Zoom burnout during your courses?

Participants tell us our courses are so interactive, they sometimes forget they are on Zoom. Our trainings are founded in instructional design principles using Adult Learning Theory, integrating relevant, practical, and interactive exercises to foster engagement. In addition to frequent discussions, breakout sessions, and on-screen activities, there are regular breaks built into our programming.

And if energy ever starts to dip, we’re ready with guided stretch breaks, and even two-minute scavenger hunts or dance parties as needed to liven things up. It’s one reason people call our courses “insanely interactive” and why we have so many repeat participants!

How much does a training session cost?

Day-long trainings begin at a total price of $5,000, which covers all materials and a two-person training staff, typically from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. These courses can also be split across two mornings or afternoons at no additional cost. Half-day courses usually begin at $3,200. Divided across a group, that makes for a very reasonable per-person cost, with no travel expense or downtime.

What’s the best course to begin with?

We have more than two-dozen courses to choose from. Many of our clients begin with the basics, like Developing Effective Messages, Communicating Numbers & Statistics, or Social Marketing of Public Health. Others are looking for more advanced topics like Using Social Norms to Change Health Behavior, Audience Analysis on a Shoestring, Understanding Social Determinants of Health, or Systems Thinking in Public Health.

After the training is over, what resources do you provide?

Graduates of our courses get access to a private, exclusive community of practice and periodic group calls and live discussions. We can also design follow-up exercises and drills tailored to your needs.

How many people can attend a training?

To ensure maximum interaction and engagement in our hands-on courses, we suggest a group of 15-25 participants, but can often accommodate smaller or larger groups depending on the training. Let’s discuss.

Where can I see a sample of your courses or get references?

Our government clients don’t have clearance for their names to appear on our website, but we will be glad to put you in touch with them and/or share our outstanding course evaluations. Sample short courses coming soon!
